The Muleskinner and the Stars

“Is the universe expanding?” This was the most fundamental question being asked of and by the world’s greatest scientific minds in 1928. To answer the question, they turned to a thirty-seven year old high school dropout and former mule team driver named Milton HumanTo find the answer, Humason would test the limits of the largest telescope in the world, its astrophysical camera and equipment, and his own endurance. His life’s work not only advanced the Big Bang Theory, but also helped to set the course for cosmology for the next 75 years.

Ron Voller is the foremost authority on the life and career of Milton Humason with extensive knowledge of the history and development of the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Ron draws many parallels between his life and that of Humason (eg: they both spent a lot of time sitting on a mountain looking at the stars). An amateur astronomer and science and history enthusiast, Ron is especially interested in retelling the stories of oft-marginalized characters in fun and interesting ways.
