May 2020 Online General Meeting

Hi all,

With the move to online astronomical events, we’re planning a general club meeting using Zoom for Friday May 8th, 2020, at 7:30 PM. We’ll be discussing some upcoming online events, and will even have some presentations! Please join in and catch up with your fellow members — maybe you’ve been enjoying some astro-related activities at home, or reading up on new things to try. It will be a novel experience for all of us.

Non-members will also be able to watch the meeting through a simultaneous stream to Youtube. If you aren’t a member but want to watch an online BAA meeting, continue to check this site. We’ll post instructions to join closer to the meeting time.

Some tips for members to join easily:
You will receive an email containing the May meeting details within the coming week. If you don’t get anything, please reach out.

On a laptop or computer?
In the email you received with the meeting invitation, click the link at the top. It will take you to Zoom’s website. You may need to download and install the Zoom application first. Once the Zoom app has opened, follow the prompts to join with your computer’s audio (microphone and speakers) and turn on a camera if you have one.

On a smartphone?

Download the Zoom app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android.) Then, open the email you received with the meeting invitation and click the link at the top. This should open the Zoom app. Follow the prompts to connect using your smartphone’s microphone and camera.

Using a landline or phone? (Audio-only)
Look in the meeting invitation email for the “dial by your location” section. Dial the corresponding number, then enter the Meeting ID and Password when prompted. You might miss out on the video aspect of the presentations (and you won’t get to see everyone else’s lovely faces) so joining with a computer would be preferred.

Hope to see lots of members at the meeting this Friday, and that everyone is staying safe and healthy.

Welcome to newly redesigned Buffalo Astronomy Website

We are proud to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website.

On behalf of the Buffalo Astronomical Association, welcome! Our old website has served us well for years, but technology continues to develop and with this redesign we will be able to take advantage of the most current tools to enjoy our hobby and share our news and projects speedily and effectively. Work on the site is ongoing, but here are some new things to check out at launch…

Get connected

The new site employs a modern layout and design, it is optimized to view on multiple devices using any level of internet connection. Whether you are on an iPad at home, a smartphone in the field, or using your grandparents IBM in rural Buffalo, you will be able to keep in touch with the BAA member community. For the first time, a database with user editable profiles will be implemented, allowing our members to get to know and stay connected with each other.

Get organized

We’ve tried to make the website structure more organized and intuitive with a design that uses thematic associations between parts of the site and encourages you to move organically to learn more about our members, topics and events. The navigation bar will be your guide. It will grow with pull down menus as we add more features and content.

Get social

We focused on integrating social media into every part of the site, so wherever you are you can share what you see with your friends and colleagues. We are also focusing more on multimedia, so images, videos and other multimedia content can be added to maximize the impact of our communication. Watch for new galleries of images, videos and event photos coming soon.

Jump in!

We encourage you to explore the new site. Although much has changed, all of the resources that we have created over the years are still part of the site and archives (scans of vintage issues of the Spectrum) will be available soon. Thanks to everyone who has given us feedback on the site design and helped us to create a more connected, organized and social Buffalo Astronomical Association website.
